Emergency Relief

The past 20 years has seen our community in Sierra Leone struck by a brutal civil war (blood diamonds, child soldiers, etc.), a three-year long Ebola crises, massive flooding and mudslides, Covid, and a hundred micro-emergencies derived from the inability of those in the destitution to handle illness, death in the family, loss of homes, loss of jobs, etc. When impoverished families struggle, the first thing to go is often food, the next—shelter. It doesn’t take much to push those living on the edge or starvation over.

Our mission is education, but who among us would be ready to learn after not eating for a few days in a row? Who’s ready for social studies after sleeping in the rain? How realistic is it for a child to stay in school losing his/her family lost their bread winner? These emergencies cannot be predicted, but we can plan for them. Sometimes it might take no more than a bag or two of rice to keep a child in school through a crisis. Other times it may require the rebuilding of their home. We cannot replace a family member, but we can provide temporary assistance until the family can get back on their feet. We can help with the crises, and in doing so ensure our students’ futures can keep growing.
